Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.
Positive psychology is a recent branch of psychology that is the scientific study of the strengths and virtues that enable individuals and communities to thrive. It is not intended to simply treat mental illness, instead it is meant to complement and add to other forms of traditional therapy. It is based on the idea that people want to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives and helps individuals achieve this by aiding one to cultivate what is best within the self. Positive psychology works with people to understand the role positive emotions play in their contentment with the past, happiness in the present, and hope in the future. This is carried out by studying ones strengths and learning to apply these strengths in new and rewarding ways. This is a strength based therapy that does not minimize negative emotions or difficult past events, but adds to this by stressing the importance of also exploring how things go right.
